The next Long-Term Support (LTS) release of the mainstream Linux distribution, Ubuntu, is officially here.
The next Long Term Support (LTS) release of Ubuntu released on April 23rd 2026 with five years of support included, with the previous version 24.04 remaining supported until 2029, with point releases updated every few months. The last supported official release is 24.04.03 at the time of writing this.
According to the release schedule, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is due for a point release on August 6th 2026, which will include security updates and patches.
Currently, the 26.04 LTS release only supports Wayland, with GNOME 50 as its desktop environment.

If, like me, you are using an older desktop with X11, this latest release may prove a nightmare to install and use as a daily driver.
Ubuntu is still rated the best go-to distribution, alongside Linux Mint, for beginners.
